Yau Ma Tei Theatre
The Yau Ma Tei Theatre speaks the heart and soul of many theatre goers. Built in 1925 on the intersection of Waterloo Road and Shanghai Street, it is the only pre war theatre left in Kowloon. The theatre has undergone a significant renovation project after the Government of Hong Kong listed the theatre as a heritage structure, turning the complex into a modern and sleek 300-seat auditorium for Cantonese opera in 2012. The building’s restoration was reminiscent to the original design, making it a perfect venue to enjoy the diversity and richness of traditional Chinese theatre. In the auditorium, the audience sits under the original wooden roof beams, which remarks the history of the building. Currently, it is surrounded by high rise residential buildings on 3 sides and a fruit market on the remaining side.
Although the Sunbeam Theatre in North Point maybe more famous that the Yau Ma Tei Theatre, it is definitely worth the trip there, as some shows come with English subtitles for non-Cantonese speakers who want to enjoy and experience this form of art. This venue is also more favoured by younger cantonese opera performers, which could be the saving grace for the dying form of entertainment.
