Shau Kei Wan Main Street East
Although the official name for this district is Shau Kei Wan, it also had another name that locals used to call it - Ngor Yan Wan, which directly translates in to “Hungry People Bay”. However, once you walk along Shau Kei Wan Main Street East, you will slowly realize that you could never be hungry here with the variety of food and restaurants residing here. Many restaurants are popular among locals, but they have yet to be touched by the high rents that plague many of Hong Kong’s other districts, such as Causeway Bay, Tsim Sha Tsui and Mong Kok. Main Street East is considered one of the most authentic “food streets” in Hong Kong。 Even if the restaurants lined up on both sides of the road are not decorated glamorously, it still retains what locals call the “Hong Kong Flavor”.
Along the street, you may come across a Chinese temple. This is the Tin Hau Temple, where some locals would gather and worship the Tin Hau, the Chinese goddess of the sea, who is said to protect fishermen and sailors, and these temples were usually constructed next to the sea. However, when you look around, you don’t see any glimpses of the sea from where you are standing - this is because of the intense land reclamation that has taken place on Hong Kong Island, and Shau Kei Wan was not left behind. The temple is still left in place because of its historical significance.
You wouldn’t expect to see a Michelin-Starred restaurant in a tiny neighbourhood here, yet there is. Hin Ho Curry infuses Indian cuisine with local flavours to adapt to the taste buds of the regulars, presenting a unique sense of surprise you would rarely get anywhere else. Indonesian, Thai, Cantonese, Japanese, Shanghainese, Street food… you name it, this street has it all. It is comparable to a miniature Mong Kok with less people!
