Lui Seng Chun
Located at a busy intersection of Lai Chi Kok Road and Tong Mi Road in Mong Kok, the Lui Seng Chun stands tall and proud facing the ordinary hustle and bustle of the area. Like many of the tong laus at that time, the bottom floor was used for commercial use, while the upper three floors were used for residential use.
The building was originally owned by one of the founders of the Kowloon motor Bus Company, Lui Liang. His founding associate Lui Shui Tak used the name “Lui Seng Chun”, which was his own family-run chinese chiropractic medicine name, and opened a clinic in the building for the practice. He engraved the words “Lui Seng Chun” in Chinese on top of the building in a stone frieze to promote his own business. However, the Lui’s moved out of the building because there wasn’t enough space to accommodate the family, hence they vacated the building in 1970s.
In 2000, the Antiquities Advisory Board designated Lui Seng Chun a Grade I historic building, hence the Lui family decided to donate the complex to the government in order to preserve the history associated the building. The government then turned the building over to the Hong Kong Baptist University School of Chinese Medicine to convert it into a healthcare centre for chinese medicine. Restoration and revitalisation work was undergone, and the original design and architecture of the building was retained as much as possible. It currently has a herbal tea shop on the ground floor, along with a display showing the history of Lui Seng Chun.
