Fuk Tak Ancient Temple
Located next to a temporary market on Haiphong Road, the Fuk Tak Ancient Temple is very easily overlooked by many, as it is hidden in an alleyway behind the fence of the market. The only Chinese temple in the area was built before the 1900s as a small community shrine in respect of the Fuk Tak Earth God. Chinese workers at the Kowloon Wharf and residents in the surrounding neighbourhood would visit the temple frequently. On certain festivals such as the 1st and 15th day of the 1st Chinese Lunar Month, the temple would be filled with many worshippers with incense and other offerings.
In 1978, the Fuk Tak Ancient Temple was to be demolished by the Hong Kong Government in order to build a bigger Tsim Sha Tsui Market. However, after many local residents opposed the decision of demolishing the temple, it was left there and later rebuilt and renovated.
Even if you do not believe in the Fuk Tak God, it might be worth to pay the temple a visit - it specialises in longevity.
